With 27 weeks to Ironman 70.3 in Buffalo City and 38 weeks to Ironman South Africa, the Finishline 2011 Team already has 6 weeks of training under the belt. So if you have not started training yet, you have some catching up to do!
Three swim workshops with Ironman swim coach, Kyle Main, have been completed and the swimmers are covering between 1500 and 1800 metres in the pool three times per week. An underwater video analysis was recorded for each swimmer. A follow-up video analysis will be done in a few months’ time to observe the improvements in swim technique.
Also completed are their bike setups using the highly sophisticated Retül 3-D motion capture system. Retül captures 100% objective data in a dynamic state and evaluates multiple viewpoints (3-D) simultaneously while the rider is pedalling. This ensures better efficiency and performance, more comfort and limits the risk of injury.
Group rides and runs have been well attended. The teammates have gelled well and motivation levels remain high.
The team also attended an info evening on heart rate training zones, energy systems and basic nutrition. Dietary guidelines were provided and nutritional requirements during training were discussed. More detailed information on these topics will be provided to the team at a later stage.
A Run Clinic will be held this week where we will look at each athlete’s running technique and teach running drills.
Next month the athletes will attend a bike maintenance and repair workshop where they will be taught, amongst other things, the basics of puncture repair, repairing a broken chain or spoke, as well as being shown how to maintain their bikes in perfect condition.
Ex-Finishline athletes from previous years are welcome to join us on some of the group rides. Please contact Alan (alan@triangle.cc) for details.
